Week 4 - Bus Stop Stairs
This is a picture I took while I was using the stairs at the CSULA bus stop. This image intrigued me because of the way the light creates the shadow through the cage and the way the ray of light shines through the trees. There is a very depressing tone to this image. It is as if there is freedom and a whole new world to explore, but we are isolated and can't get out. The ray of light shooting through the tree teases us, because the black shadows of the cage are placed upon us and there is no way to get rid of it. We so desperately want to be covered in the light and feel whole, but how do we manage that when the steel cage and the shadows are so thick?

This is a really cool picture Ruben! I definitely thought of myself locked up with no way to escape into the trees and bushes which makes it all more intriguing. The trees and bushes are freedom to me and that fence was definitely a barrier.
ReplyDeleteAt the same time I thought of Jurassic Park and I totally imagined a velociraptor blending in in the bushes which would make me want to stay behind the fence. I think I would use a leko brushstroke as my source of light with a amber gel to replicate this lighting onstage. Maybe some gobos if necessary depending on the angle of the brushstroke.
Definitely get the feeling of being trapped in a cage, reminded me of a zoo or something! Love the clear shadow of the fencing creating that linear texture and trapped feeling...also love the overlay of soft dappled sunlight through trees over the top of it too...it's a neat situation where both harsh lines and soft organic textures combine. Fantastic!
