Prefect lighting isn't always found in a bathroom- Week 4

I took this picture over the weekend at my first baseball game and was hesitant to use it because its a selfie, but I think it's the perfect example of lighting on certain skin tones makes a difference. The sun was setting so we get this nice amber that's reflecting off my hair and skin making it bronze while also casting nice shadows from the side light. I also love the light reflecting off our white shirts, making the intensity of the light even more so.

Week 3 Chlorophylled

Suspended in a moment of supervised nature there hangs a barrage of loose greenery throughout the front lawn. The light rays coming through the thick foliage gradually makes its way unto the bottom ground cover where the transparency of each individual leaf glows in chlorophylled aura. This image represents a yearning for an American white picket fenced family home with 1.8 children. The sun, setting gradually in the west, illuminates this house in a warm inviting radiance. The blends of bright and shadowed greens contrast with the dry greys of the sidewalk and hardened tree so as to say “I will not wither away into the starkest night!”

Week 4 | Warm Winds | Jazmin Figueroa

TA 434
Week 4

Warm Winds

I took this picture about a year ago and it never fails to bring me back to this very night.  I love this picture because of the dark sky.  Despite the Dubai mall being fairly close to this scene, when I looked up I saw a dark sky.  I love the architecture of the buildings in the picture.  The fact they resemble each other to me brings a very mystical feeling.  Buildings hardly resemble each other in Southern California.  The dim light makes everything much more mystical not to mention it also brings a romantic tone to the setting.  The water reflecting the lamps also brings in more detail to the picture.  I get a sense of comfort when looking at this picture. Even though the picture did not capture the weather, it did capture the supple water.  This night was filled with warm winds.  It was fairly warm but there was a breeze that made things so much better.

week4- Reaching out

Well what can I say I was playing outside in the light and it was a beautiful hot day. I found myself this lovely tree and my heart of hearts decides to shoot this shot of me.  I squint because I feel the light in my eyes; to me this picture represents a significance to life when it lights up so bright your eyes are fuzzed to your futures path so you have to reach out for what heart leads you to go for. The source of light here of course is the sun which if recreated, the light source would be a fresnel to create a wash and some gobos to create texture.

Week 4 Karen Arana

I took this picture on Wednesday at around midday during one of my breaks between my classes. I decided to take this picture because I am usually under this particular palm tree taking advantage of the shade that it provides me. I was lying down and I appreciated the misty clouds, the warmth of the sun and the fresh grass under my body. I felt mellow and Zen because I was not looking at anything or anyone that reminded me of school or class. Being surrounded by nature is always refreshing and soothing which allows me to relax and center myself before I have to worry about all the things I have to do. I felt one with the earth. Happy Earth Day.

This picture inspires me to really take time to myself and to stay away from everyone else in order to center myself. I get time to take in nature, which is being mistreated in many places around the world. I believe this picture relates to the stage because it gives off a peaceful feeling. The source of light (sun) is actually behind the Palm tree leaves although it doesn’t look that way in this picture. In this picture it looks like the source of light is coming from the left side but it can also just be a reflection on the clouds. Therefore, in order to relate it to onstage lighting, the lighting should be natural and washed out. A Fresnel brushstroke would look really nice and add to the mellow feeling. A cool blue would look nice, as part of the sky and the white would represent the source of light instead of a typical amber look. I will definitely go with the white because it's what looks natural and simple. This lighting onstage would look fresh and it can encourage people to treat our earth with the respect it deserves.

Week 4 - Edward

This is probably my favorite place on campus. I found it one night walking around after a rehearsal that left me feeling absolutely drained and exhausted. I remember a soft, warm glow that shone in the corner of my eye. After turning and walking into the light path, I found myself at peace and felt as if all my troubles were disappearing. All the lighting fixture give off a worldy sensation with all of them at an equal distance, and equal intensity. This soft focus would be achieved by using mostly fresnel work, with maybe the parcan. The par can would be a soft rose color at a low intensity as not to steal the scene, while the fresnels would be place at equal lengths around the place to represent the photo above. These fresnels and maybe even spotlights, would have ambers to really give it this comraderie look. The main take away I get from this picture is safety and peace. Maybe using a blue as well could be something that could get the peace to really shine.

Week 4 Melanie Martinez

I took this picture while sitting in the kitchen at my Grandma's house. Why I decided to share this, is because this is home. This is my home. I've known this place since I was brought home from the hospital. Why I specifically picked this light is because growing up there and being there on weekends my cousins and I knew that when that light was turned on we had to get up and help my grandma clean the kitchen. It seems crazy to me that my grandma was able to train us to know what to do with just turning on a light. This light gives me comfort but worries me at the same time. Comfort because I know my granny can still do what she loves most, clean, but worried because I knew if I don't get up and help I will get yelled at. Of course I would not get in as much trouble today as I did back then as a kid but I guess knowing that I would it always stood on me. The concept can works theatre too. Many actors can tell when they have to go on stage just by a light going on or off. Funny to me how I connected these ideas to each other. It really didn't hit me until I sat there and thought about it. The comfort of that light lets me appreciate my grandma still here with us. I feel like after she passes her spirit is going to turn the light on for us because she wants the kitchen clean. Haha. Who knew a simple light can tell a story.

Week #4 Evea Gornall

Balance. That is the word that comes to my mind when I look at this photo. A friend took it of me in dance class and while, of course, it's not the best quality photo and I don't have anything close to a perfect dancer's form, the image itself of a body in a state of balance silhouetted against the windows to the outside world says a lot: a physical balance in strength of the pose; a balance of the mind to find the concentration to hold the pose; the balance of nature's trees and bright skyline versus manmade buildings and architecture; and of course the balance between light and the absence thereof (darkness). I think the distinct contrast of light speaks volumes, even in how it leaches most of the colour from the scene, leaving only a hint of pale blue, yellow and green and a dull red in an otherwise almost greyscale photo. I would like to use a Fresnel with a light blue tint to get a very clear, soft wash to represent the light source, which is the sunlight bouncing off the white clouds, set directly behind the subject to create a similar silhouette.

Week #4 Clouds and Buildings

TA 434

"Clouds and Buildings"

Carla Moreno

I took this picture after I went to the MOCA Pacific Design Center museum.
I was captivated by the architecture and the very well mid afternoon sunlight. The natural well-lit sunlight also gave this strong energy of colors. VIBRANT AND ALIVE are ways to describe the feeling I got when I took this picture. I really liked this picture because it was during the afternoon and the sun was well-lit and I noticed that the light was reflecting the buildings. The building were primary colors and they were extremely vibrant.
The sunlight is also able to convey the nice bright day with the main primary colors Blue, Red and Green. The Green is very colorful too. The lighting should be coming from up, so the light direction would be coming from up the sky. The par can would be a light source. And two Fresnel lights coming from the side would work to light the reflecting on the buildings. The green is also clearly vibrant on the grass at the bottom of the building.
And also the use of the red and green gel to the light the focus all over the building. For the par can and to create the sun light I would use pink gel. The gels would for green #89 Moss Green, for Red= #41 Salmon, Blue #46 Parry Sky Blue, Sunlight=  #02 Bastard Amber. I would create a full rage of colors to describe and re-create the architecture that being reflected.

Week 4- Suburban Morning

I was driving around at about seven in the morning in my hometown when I saw this house that I admire.  It's got a great shadow and sun rising look that made me really want to take a photo of it.  The source of light is identified in the right edge and the effect that it put on the tree to create the shadow on the ground is distinct.  I really liked the transition in the sky of the colors from a very nice blue that increases in light intensity which changes the color to bright white.  I'd like to recreate the shadow effect with a gobo that is angled so that the beam hits the floor elongated.  The emotion I see behind this is definitely tranquil.  It's a peaceful suburban morning, the day is about to start.

Week 4, what's your focus ?

I took this picture the other day when my son and I have were outside playing . When I saw now this picture came out, I felt as if the brown background behind him & the light colors of his clothes made him really stand out . This picture also made me just remember and feel the enlightenment , joy , how important he is to me , and the how he is my main focus in life . The source of light for this photo is definitely the sun light . If I were to light this on stage I would use color R02 at about 90% intensity on the par can , and a leko as down light to show the focus in color or maybe even shin lights on both stage left and right . I'd use color R61 at full since this light is a very light blue closest to natural light . I'm a little worried how those two colors would blend but I'm hoping that the fact the blue is very settle that it would turn out okay.

Week 4 - Bus Stop Stairs

This is a picture I took while I was using the stairs at the CSULA bus stop. This image intrigued me because of the way the light creates the shadow through the cage and the way the ray of light shines through the trees. There is a very depressing tone to this image. It is as if there is freedom and a whole new world to explore, but we are isolated and can't get out. The ray of light shooting through the tree teases us, because the black shadows of the cage are placed upon us and there is no way to get rid of it. We so desperately want to be covered in the light and feel whole, but how do we manage that when the steel cage and the shadows are so thick?

You Rang?

I took this photo last night when I was coming home from Pasadena. I had an eerie feeling walking to the door. The only light source was that little lamp on the right. Since the wall was closer to me than the door, the door was all black. I told my family about this and they feel the same way as well.
I would light this on stage using a down light stage left at full and a diagonal light at down stage left at 25%. Both Leko brush strokes. The color would be a blue based white. I feel that it will create an eerie environment.

Week 4- Jenisse Castillo

I took this photo right outside of Segerstrom Hall after watching Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella. I had spent the entire day with my sister and mother enjoying their company. As I watched the show, I found myself starring at the lights and analyzing what was being used. It made me put things in perspective, thinking what I would do if I were to design that show.  As we walked out of the theater, I  was staring at all the lights we passed on the way back to the car. I turned back around at the Hall and looked at it for a second. At that moment, I saw the lights that illuminated the building. As I looked closer, I saw the lights inside and the scattering people just outside exiting the theater. It gave me a feeling of serenity. A building that brought so many people together, and was filled with chattering people, became silent. A building that once had thousands of people suddenly became... empty. Despite the lights that were lighting the inside the stillness of it made it seem dark. It was peaceful, a moment to reflect.

TA 434 | Week 2 | Neverlasting Relaxation | Jazmin Figueroa

TA 434
Week 2
Jazmin Figueroa
Neverlasting Relaxation

This picture was taken a couple months ago and was taken from the student union's balcony.  This particular picture was taken during the morning before my day started.  However, if I took this picture at a different time of the day the scene would still look as peaceful.  One of the admirable characteristics from this picture and the actual scenery itself is that in a sense it encapsulates both nature and person-made structures.  What I mean by that is that there is a fine view of the palm trees, sky, and mountains while also displaying the university's buildings.  To me this picture is very calming. But after a relaxing detachment, I must go back to my responsibilities.

I am constantly contemplating of the structures put in by humans.  Not just physical structures but systems like: politics, cities and education.  As much as I admire college life and education, I very much appreciate the natural forms like the beautiful systems already put on this planet by nature.  Although the palm trees might have been put into place by humans, the actual composition of the palm trees is not artificial.  The sky and the mountains are also in a sense not invented by humans.  To me this balcony is highly relaxing because of the fact that I am almost in a way starring at my reflection.  I am to be a student but also human on the face of the earth.  With that being said, this balcony gives me a refreshing sensation.  On this balcony I often find myself reminiscing about my school life and my career aspirations.  At the same time I wonder and ponder about the meaning of education and its correlation to my life's purpose.  It's true, I'm not just being dramatic. Haha.

There is a warm mist of light that's coming from my right side which is bringing me a whole lot of comfort.  I feel the sun only hitting some portions of my body, which in return feels like a blanket over me.  If you look closely the sun is creating shadows from the palm trees etc. To me this accentuates the refreshening emotions.  Then there's the fact that I am separated from the crowd or other students.  When sitting on the chairs on the balcony, you cannot see what's underneath you, so the thought of school work and responsibilities comes into consideration less frequently.  The baby-blue colored sky is also one of the the ingredients that helps bring peace into the scene.

The buildings in the picture are my constant reminder that I am at school and I must get back to my duties.  This goes with the cliche "what goes up, must come down." It's a beautiful break but after enjoying a warm view I have to get back to work.

Week 3 - Memorial Park Sunrise

This is a picture I took around six or seven in the mourning at the park near my house. Obviously, the sun is the main source of light. It is a little hard to see, but there are grey clouds up above. I took this picture because I love how the sun pierces through the trees and the gloomy atmosphere. It is as if there is hope within all of the sadness. Within a very pessimistic world, optimism can shine a million times brighter if we allow it to. The reddish-orange light surrounding the light makes me have a burning feeling. A very positive burn. A new revelation and self has awakened inside of me.

Week 2: (repost) Above the Clouds

This picture was taken at the Dodger's Stadium.  Everything about this photo has a deeper meaning to me.  When I see this I feel bittersweet.  Dodger's was my brother's favorite baseball team, he was from LA matter fact lived close to the stadium, and the way the clouds are in this photo, it reminds me how he's above the clouds. The source of light would definitely be sun light, bright sun light to be exact.  Or in other words, the brightness of the sun we see around 12-1pm.  If I were to light this, i'd use a light blue, not so saturated but a blue closest to the natural light from the sun.  Probably have my intensity at 80-85%.  As for brushstroke, I think a fresnel would be nice for a nice even wash, but I also think low side lights would probably work out for this lighting, though i'm not sure.  I'd probably have to play with it more once I'm able to use the space.  I think I'd also lay a soft focus to the left side of the stage to represent the focus on the hat.

Week 2: Remembering good times. -Britnee

I took this picture in San Diego about 2 weeks ago during high noon. And although you can see the rays of sun high in the sky, its still a darker picture. I loved how the sun hit the water as a reflection so it makes everything else look dark and silhouette like. The intensity of the light hitting the water is way higher than the light in the sky in this picture. This is definitely an example of downlight and backlight working together.  Also love the sky with a pale off-white (almost yellow) and the bright blue and closer to the sun rays, its almost lavender.  The only scene I could think of using this lighting was the beginning a story like a flash forward or a flashback. Something about the lighting seems unreal and more nostalgic to me.

Grey is Great

This photo was taken on Saturday driving home from Pasadena. I captured this moment because I felt very peaceful. The overcast created gray shades of light and that really brings out the dark green from the trees. The wet road from the rain created a reflection of the light so that made the image more interesting.

On top of the morning..

Frustration

Here the use of natural light is main source implemented in the shot.  The color is low lit to create an off white amber and its a backlight source, I'd say at the intensity of 80%. This is more of a concealing shot, a in the moment kind of feeling. The brushstroke to be used can be a frenel or a leko, but I'm not sure if that is my only option to be honest. The moment I liked to convey is the morning hw blues (frustration).... Shot at the top of the morning.....

Week # 2 Isolate Dominion

On a random trip somewhere past Sierra Madre I stopped off by the shoulder of the road to find out where I was. Realizing that this was the best opportunity to take some really great photos, I shot away. The image shows the setting of the sun behind a darkened mountain with my subject at the not so very foreground (I'm afraid of heights). My distance away helped to capture the lengthened shadows created by the safety road block cement thing. I really enjoy the Los Angeles skyline in this image from afar.

I would recreate this on a set flooded with cool blue gels on a cyclorama and a giant warm transparent gelled down light. I would make sure to use some top half hats to cut any unwanted dispersion of light in order to create those rich sharp shadows on the ground.

Sky, Sun, Earth's Horizon, Mountain, Subject. The image gives me a feeling of isolation. The solitary emotion comes from the endless sky above a distant horizon of the earth. My subject alone, almost as if she is calmly absorbing every second of the landscape's natural beauty, portrays a kind of awe. Woman above the world of man, Hera by her own right.

Week 2 Jenisse Castillo

I took this photo a couple days ago while leaving to school. As I was walking to my car, I stopped to look at the sky and noticed that there was a direct split in the clouds. I noticed that the left side of the sky was dark and gloomy, while the other side was bright and sunny. It was a moment where I took some time to reflect on my life. I felt like the sky that day, gloomy but bright. There are aspects of all our lives where we all feel like we are stuck in this dark and gloomy side, but if we keep moving forward we will get to the part that is bright and sunny.
This would be an interesting concept to take to the stage. Using different colored gels and intensities to achieve the two distinct levels of brightness. Gobo's could be used as well to give the cloud pattern.

Week #2 Evea Gornall

Not the best quality picture, but I was driving and the sky was just PERFECT and I had to try and capture it. I love the dark grey/blue colour of the clouds contrasted with the soft yellow of the light beams coming down through them and the dark silhouettes of the trees. This scene feels majestic and cathartic; like a happy ending after an epic battle or the calm after a storm.

Week 2 Steve Sotelo

I took this last night when Edward and I were in Hollywood.  The photo doesn't do the scene justice. I get feelings of calm and isolation.  These feelings are simply from the lights themselves. The main source of lighting here is the street lights.  These are the newer set of lights that are replacing the old orange lights.  I really like this lighting and the range that the separate lights give.  I would want to recreate this by scattering several Leko's pointing down so that there are pockets of dark within the beams of light.

Week 2 Melanie Martinez

I decided to use this picture I took on my way to San Antonio this past Thanksgiving. Out in the middle of nowhere and how awesome this sunset looked. The colors it created in the sky. Looking at it now, seems like a drawing. How fun it would be to recreate this with stage lights. Some gels I would use are blues, yellow, and orange. Looking at this picture I get a feel of a Halloween night and kids walking through the streets trick-or-treating, but something beyond that is going to happen. Something tragic possibly. I get that feeling just by looking at this picture. Of course that is not what was going through my mind as I was taking the picture.

Week 2: Karen Arana

In the distance it looks grey and gloomy and it looks as if at any moment a storm will begin. On the other side, there is bright sunlight that to me represents hope. I interpreted the clouds and the sun as a battle in the skies like the ones seen in cartoons when the weather changes from cloudy to sunny within seconds. I felt like I was caught between the transition of the clouds and the sun and that made me feel hopeful when the bright sun was shining on the yellow houses.

I believe this photo relates to the stage because light cues can change the mood and emotions within seconds. I would probably use Fresnel’s in order to replicate the smooth wash of the clouds and sunlight. A different option would be to use Leko's to replicate the sunlight but first I would like to see how the different light fixtures look onstage. However, if I ended up using a Leko I would probably use a gobo to add texture and shadows that are seen on this picture.

Week #2 Lighting Blog

I took this picture on a walk around my neighborhood the other night and it struck me as a perfect source for this lighting blog. Although not in the frame, the main light source is coming from the moon of course, with many lights such as street lights, among others, helping to fill in. The chain link fence reminded me of a sort of gobo effect that can be used on stage. As for the lights themselves, you can see the difference in not only color, but intensity as well. For example, while the street light can be seen as more of a fresnel type of brushstroke, the light on the top left of the picture greatly seems like a par can with its power. As for the feeling this picture gives me, an intense blue would probably set the mood for me, play around with the intensity of the burshstroke itself to give it a real night time feeling, along with some ambers for the rest of the lights themselves.

Week 1 - "Mantra Coffee Entrance"

A new coffee shop opened up near my house called "Mantra Coffee," and I found the entrance to the place quite fascinating, so I decided to take a picture of it. The source of light is coming from the top-right of the entrance. The lights on the right side are very powerful but sort of have a wash over the whole area, so if I were to recreate the source in a production I would use a fresnel at 100% intensity. The lights above the people sitting down are very soft and ambient, but have a linear shape to them, so I would end up using a PAR can at 35 or 40%. The lamp is the softest source of light within this picture. If I wasn't able to use a lamp or fire on stage I would recreate the fire by using using a fresnel at 15 or 20%. For the lights above, there is an amber and yellow texture, so for the source of light I would use a "Bastard Amber," and for the lamps above I would use a "Pale Yellow." From where I was standing, there was a green and blue light shimmering around me due to the lights above reflecting off of the water. This picture made me realize that reflection has an influence on lighting. Reflection makes the light illuminate the area much more. There is a very peaceful and comfortable feel to the picture. What drew me to the picture was how all the lights reflected off of the fountain. It reminded me of a production I saw last year called "Antigone," where at one point of the play the source of light was a water-well. Blue light was shining out of the well, and I was very curious to figure out which brushstroke was being used in the well and how the light was in the water. The aquatic feel merged with the ambient lights makes me feel relaxed. It's as if the lights are telling me not to rush or stress, just take your time.

Week #1

Hello,

This is Carla Moreno TA 434

This is my picture, I shoot this and I like it because of the colorful images that are being lit through the sun and the glass. This was inside a church at a nearby cemetery. I really like this image because it would be wonderful to recreate this in a theatrical stage. If it was possible to do this with lights.
The color and the contrast of the marble inside gravestones and the statue make is it a really great contrast. The angel with the two candles are also great compositions to this light and the sun coming from outside to light the inside of the church cemetery.
