Week 6 Night green
This apartment complex is lit in a green colored up light hitting the wall at night. It was a nice street that I had to stop and take a nice picture of it. The house to the left complemented the green colored wall with its amber colored porch. It was difficult to get both structures in while also going for the full moon in the background. It was an unexpected scene in where the trees made it seem like a performance was about to be played out, a sort of street theatre at night! An impromptu puck from Shakespeare's A midsummer night's dream appearing out of the green if you will.

Week 8 - CSULA Library
This outside the CSULA Library. When first looking at this I thought of blinds for a window, but soon learned that these shapes can be interpreted in different ways. For example, a book shelf or a cage. It's fascinating how with use of angles, We are able to create shapes and picture with lighting rather than just changing the color of skin. The shadows on the right look like chairs. The fact that this is near a library creates a symbol for college students. It's as if the cycle of studying is endless.
week 10 hike
I took this picture this past week on a hike. It has been a
long while since I’ve actually gone on a hike. As my cousin and I were hiking
on the trail it was very peaceful. The sun setting, no one around, it was
quiet, and all you can hear really was us breathing so hard because we were out
of breath. We stopped to rest and that’s when I took this picture. After
looking at this picture, geez I never realized how much we pollute our air. I
enjoy this picture because I like the colors the sun creates not only in the
sky but on the ground too. Looking at the flowers on the ground, it starts from
the dark and then there is a ray of sunshine giving it this beige looking
color. The colors in the sky I see have layers. Starting from the bottom there
is this layer of gray, which I’m assuming is all out polluted air, then there
is some gray/black clouds, and clear skies. As I was up on this hill, I felt
comfortable, this would be a place where I can sit for long hours and relax or
even study. If I learned anything about these blogs is that I need to appreciate
the simple things. Writing these blogs really made me think outside the box and connect with my emotions
through natural light.
Week 7 - Obsession
This is outside of a Japanese restaurant called "Sushi Sawa." There is a relaxed but passionate feel to this photo due to the shadows and the red lamps. The way the bright light blends with the squares on the rail makes the shadows look like trees casting a shadow on window curtains when the full moon is out. The red light gives an intimate feel, to make the area feel more like a home with traditional Japanese style.
Week 7 - Obsession - Caffeination
My most recent of unhealthy boojie obsessions is a small place on a small corner in Los Angeles' Little Tokyo. This place lures me in and welcomes me with one of the gods' gift to man in the form of a little brown coffee bean. The sole reason I come in is for their $6 Kenya Coffee Flight. Being an obsessed coffee connoisseur after working at a café I have come to find that this obsession leaves me nearly dry of all funds. The elegance of this establishment is matched only by the same delicacy of which the baristas care for in their meticulous preparation of their selection of sweet ambrosia. The lights behind the bottom counter of the bar look welcoming as any pedestrian walking along the sidewalk may look in at the glowing panel. This place calls to me, welcoming me, making me feel at home. As I look around I get a steampunk vibe. I feel welcomed in this place where a talented lighting designer must have been hired to create this ambiance. A bad ass designer such as my super awesome lighting professor over at Cal State L.A.
Week 6 - Texture
This is a picture of the back alley of an apartment near my friends house. It was a very dirty alley, but something about the white light washing over the tree and leaves made this specific area look clean and positive. What's most intriguing is the intensity of the light mixing with the color of the leaves. There is a nice texture to the leaves which makes it look like daylight is shining upon it. There is biblical symbolism to this photo. Within the crossroads, there is the wide path that leads to darkness and then there is the narrow path that leads to salvation.
Late night parking
I took this picture when I found parking right by my house. When I saw the image, it brought me back to the "grave yard scene" feeling. I always hate parking here at night cause it always seems creepy/scary. The fact that there's a strawberry field right behind those gates with workers driving and walking in and out at any times, makes me feel more unsafe. this picture made me feel grief, unsafe, loneliness, as if I was having a dark lonely dream and suddenly find a light for sense of direction but scared of what's on the other side. There's definitely some gray shades in this picture , so just as I did for my final project, I'd use a light lavender on my shins but have more intensity on the left shin since it's brighter on stage left. Then I'd use a parcan in an amber color for the light post. Using the fresnel a for an even wash would probably be just as reasonable , but I feel like it'd take away from the emotion. I really liked how my head lights brightened up the floor and only a 1/4 of the image . There's not any loud colors in this picture either which I liked. Made it feel a bit more creepy, especially how you see a house and some cars then a gated fence where all you can see is how dark it is there.
Week 10- Jenisse Castillo
Brilliant Shadows
Okay, I know I'm kind of the subject of this picture, but that's not why I like it! My friend took this of me at a small horse ranch near my house in Glendale. It's one of my favourite spots because it's so hidden and tucked away, you would never know there was this little piece of open land in the middle of urban LA. In fact, if it weren't for the palm tree, I would think I was up on my grandparents' farm! When I look at it, I feel both the bittersweetness of another day coming to an end and a sense of longing, possibly because the light itself exists so far away in the distance past a wide expanse of land, and possibly because I just have sentimental feelings for the setting. I love that the sky has dark purple/blue clouds that are outlined by white and gold. I think it makes a really cool contrast and because everything in the picture is shadowed in only the light reflecting off of these dark clouds, it all just makes the bright white and gold seem even more brilliant in comparison. In a theater I would want to use an uplight from behind the subject in pale yellow or a very, very pale blue to represent brilliant sunlight, and maybe a few side lights dimmed in a dark purple or dark blue to give off a hint of that cool dark feel. However, if I couldn't place an uplight at that angle, I might use a parcan and maybe even some shins to create some cool shadows. I might even want to add some gobos to create specific shadows, since so much of this picture lives in shadow.
Lavender Sky
One of the first things I ever noticed about LA, when I visited before I even moved down here, were the purple trees everywhere. I fell in love with them! Something you don't see all the time here, though, are overcast skies, so of course when I stepped outside and saw this I absolutely HAD to take a picture (which Karen, over on the bottom left, noticed and asked if I was taking for this class :p ). The clear white light and almost lavender-grey sky set as the backdrop to this purple tree was stunning -- even this picture doesn't capture it's brilliance. To me, it felt very comforting and sweet. To recreate it I would probably use the Parcan as the source and I would use very cool toned lights in pale blues and lavenders with maybe a faint pink here and there to add a bit depth and a comfy warmth.
Clocking out
Everyday I get out in the evenings from school and I always appreciate the fact that there's still light out. Earlier this week I saw this sunset and it made me appreciative of the world I live in and the things that I get to do. That is such a beautiful view with the blues transitioning into the pinks and ambers, and I get to see that everyday coming out of doing stuff that I love to do. I also get a hint of romance in it. This kind of sunset is something that I want to be able to see from a balcony that I'm on with a lady friend. The way I would light this is with a fresnel uplight with a pinkish amber gel with some blue fresnel sidelights.
Week 6 Steve Sotelo Mountains of Baldy
I was in the mountains of my hometown when I saw this view and I just couldn't stop thinking about the illumination of this view. There are the clouds that cover the sun but it adds another character to the view. I love how farther away the mountains are the less visible they become and start to fade into the mountains. I also appreciated how even though the cloudy sky would make for a gloomy emotion, I get calm and peaceful from it. I would light this by using some fresnel sidelights with some lavender gels for the calm, cool, and clean look.

EXTRA CREDIT-BLOG POST by Carla Moreno
My final EXTRA CREDIT PHOTO BLOG POST.
This picture was taken at
the Calvary Cemetery Church, it is the entrance. I really like the color of
blue in the sky. So different, the shadows and the green tress. I like the
contrast of the beige/white buildings. I would use gobos to create the shadows
with the trees. The blue in the sky is something that is different so much
contrasts with blues in the sky, they can be tint, vibrant blues, this kind of
blue looks more solid blue, it’s in the middle of light and dark blue. I like that
it is a very clear day. The emotions I get from this is WEDDING DAY and A RITES OF
PASSAGE. This would be perfect for a time of graduation or a rites of passage,
it would be great to take photos for memoires. The emotional response that I
get that screams wedding day its because of the beige color of the building and
the white cross on the top. I also get that this location could also be part of
a front entrance of a wealthy elite high school. I like this building, it was
build during the 1890’s so it looks old and it reminiscent of old ye
yester times. The church building is also part of the Roman Catholic
Archdiocese of Los Angeles, so all the buildings are properly kept and that is
why this picture looks very pristine and clear, and clean. I get a vibe that is
very high elite and wealthy.

Week 10 - Edward Rosales
I have friends who live in Van Nuys, and as much as I love to visit them and see them, the trek from Whittier to there is a bit of a pain. There is a bright side however, and this is just one picture to highlight the beautiful imagery that I get when I am driving either there, or back home. Almost everyone posts a picture of a sunset for the reasons of its sentimental and romantic nature that sunsets are attributed to. This does not speak romance to me however. What I get from this photo is relief. It is the feeling of getting home, and taking off your shoes, and laying in bed after a long day. It is the culmination of hard work finally being finished, or finally paying off, and the feeling of completion. Maybe it is the complimentary colors of the far off sunset in its bright burning yellow-orange, to its more soft colored orange-red transitioning into a lavender-blue. Maybe it is the contrast when it comes to warm and cool colors. Or perhaps it is the clouds and how they remind me of a steam engine train, and the things that are attributed with trains, such as traveling. The sun is the major source of light, but you can see a far off emergence of light in the form of a street light, and a neon sign. Even some headlights poke through very scarcely.
LAST BLOG POST – Ordinary Buildings- by Carla Moreno
This is a wonderful
building that is located near the cemetery church where I live. I really like
this picture everything is bright. The sky, the green grass, and the far away
palm trees. And the cathedral building that is grey. The sun is bright and very
open. The emotional response that I see and feel are PEACEFUL and SUMMER the
picture evokes so many things like memories and road trips. This reminds me so
much of road trips and seeing things on the side of the road. Passing by the
architectures and places that’s exists from within my environment and places
people pass by through. I love it! This is amazing because this reminds me of
how I also take my environment for granted. I never knew that I could take
pictures of wonderful buildings. I have learned a lot in this class that has
made take a step back and enjoy beautiful things. I had great pleasure in
taking lightning class because I am aware of emotional responses that can be
emoted through lightning. Everyday objects and buildings exist in everyday life
and I never really noticed them. The fun part is when you re-create all of this
when you’re doing theater.
The emotions are carefree. And the colors to light
this would be yellows, blues, and greens that I would use. I liked the carefree
emotional response I get when I look at this picture. I also feel that it gives
me chills over how ordinary it is when you live your life and you enjoy it. If I were to light this I
would use really warm and bright colors on top and then if I would use the
lights on the left or ride side they would be tints. Especially because the far
way palm trees almost looks blurred and far away.
week 10- Just for fun
Well this is a picture that I shot of a stage that I just wanted to share for fun. I believe I have done all my blogs so just for fun this was shot at a Montley Crue concert. Had lots of fun watchin the stage light up with different color lights and getting to see a little mini coaster in the middle of the whole crowd. This was the night where tommy lee got stuck upside down in the middle of the crowd on the coaster. I say a bunch of updated lekos where used source 4's, lots of LED. But I had lots of fun and that was the feeling here, hair metal and singing to the star with a circle..sign of the beast??!!!...not my thing but when your invited to a concert for free you go and take in the unexpected while praying to god for forgivness for not known about that star in the show ..lol!!!
week 8- VA WELCOMING BLD
This shot was taken at sun down at the VA medical center on wilshire. This shot I would want to think is a an in depth shot with the source of sunlight setting in the west...I see some amber and yellow tones in this light and well the feeling I get from this is a sense of longing because a friend that I worked with long ago, who is a veteran is in the hospital recovering from a stroke and an arterial stent...at the age if 74 I guess I'm lucky that he is doing better now... and not only was visiting him on this day but I was looking into trying to help him sign up for social security because his hard head butt was stuborn not wanting to sign up because he felt it was a sign of weakness.....
Week 10- too early for realistic lights
So during a Disney marathon, you get to run backstage. The time was around 5:30am and in order to see where to run, they had different lights lighting the way on the ground. I took a picture of 2 runners by the mile 1 marker. I love the way they lit the sign and the backstage. I knew it was important by the crazy colors like the pink and green. I also love the uplight. Because it's behind the 2 girls, it's not scary at all and helps with camera focus. To the right, there was lots of angled frontlight so that helped see everyone as well. The green light would be lit with a frenal light but the pink would be a leko for sure.
Week 8- bright shadows
So I was gifted flowers to start a little garden where I paint. It had been a cloudy day but the sun came out in the afternoon and highlighted the flowers nicely showing all the texture. I love the shadows casted, reminding me of a gobo. If the flowers were a little more muted, the lighting with the shadows could work for a film nor style. The angle is side light and a little harsh so I'd use a leko to mimick this look. The color is a little warm so depending on the light itself, a gel may not be needed as well. For film noir the timing would be slow and steady to add to the dramatic nature of the style.
